Bad news for Chelsea: Spanish football expert says interest building in key figure

Athletic Bilbao confirmed that goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga signed a renewal with the club on Monday, and that could have a negative knock-on effect for Chelsea.

As noted by the Evening Standard, the shot-stopper was a target for Real Madrid and so with that option seemingly no longer on the table, it will force the Spanish giants to consider other solutions.

That’s where Chelsea come into it, as it’s claimed that missing out on Kepa could now see Los Blancos divert their attention back towards Thibaut Courtois.

It gets worse for the Blues, as according to Spanish football expert Guillem Balague in his video below, he claims that not only are Madrid in the market for the Belgian international, but Paris Saint-Germain have already made their move in trying to convince him to move to the French capital.

In turn, Chelsea could have their hands full trying to convince their current No.1 to stay at Stamford Bridge, and while Antonio Conte will likely be impressed with how Willy Caballero has stepped in for him during his spell on the sidelines through injury this past week, the Premier League giants would still be losing one of the best goalkeepers in Europe.

As per the Evening Standard report, Chelsea are currently in contract discussions with Courtois, but with interest brewing from around Europe, it could prove tricky to convince him to stay.

The 25-year-old has won two Premier League titles with the club as well as the League Cup, while he does of course have fond memories of Spain from his previous spell with Atletico Madrid.

However, as Balague importantly notes, his children live in the Spanish capital and that could be another key factor as to why he’s eyeing a return to La Liga.
