Every Jose Mourinho signing for Man United ranked and rated – have Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez really been worth the investment?

Jose Mourinho has spent vast sums of money and brought eight players to Manchester United in his two seasons at the club so far.

And yet, United don’t seem to be a great deal better than when he took over, unless you really buy that last season’s Community Shield, EFL Cup and Europa League wins really counted as a ‘treble’?

On top of that, there’s plenty to criticise about the style of play at United under Mourinho, with fans not a great deal more entertained than they were in those dour days under Louis van Gaal.

Sure, there have been more goals and United should still cement their highest Premier League finish since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement this season, but even if they finish second it’s barely been a title race since about November.

Jose Mourinho hasn’t made the expected impact at Manchester United

With United humiliated in the Champions League this week, Mourinho will be under the microscope again – if a man with the personality and ego that he brings spends so much on players, surely he has to either be winning things or playing some pretty damn excellent football.

As it is, the Portuguese isn’t really managing either of those, so he’ll no doubt argue he still needs to invest more in this squad.

The question is, should he really? Here we rank and rate his United signings so far, from worst to best…

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Henrikh Mkhitaryan only impressed in fits and bursts at Manchester United

One of Mourinho’s first signings, Henrikh Mkhitaryan is, of course, already gone after moving to Arsenal as part of the Alexis Sanchez deal this January.

The Armenia international may not be the best player in the world and certainly looked a little out of his depth when he first joined, but he also had moments of real promise.

Overall, however, Mourinho failed to really find a place for him or work out the best way to use him and he didn’t quite do enough to take his opportunities when they came.

Score: 3/10

Victor Lindelof

He’s young and could improve, but overall it’s been far from good enough from Swedish defender Victor Lindelof so far.

The 23-year-old hasn’t been given regular starts in meaningful games for United, but whenever he has he’s mostly disappointed.

While we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt as some players take time to adjust to a new league and he has time to iron out the errors in his game, it’s not a convincing start by any means.

Score: 3.5/10

Alexis Sanchez

It’s very early days, but Manchester United will have expected far more from Alexis Sanchez.

Alexis Sanchez has made a poor start at Manchester United

The Chilean is, by all accounts, the highest paid player in the Premier League by some distance and a great deal of work must have gone in to signing him to ensure many other of Europe’s super-clubs could not.

So far, Sanchez has lost the ball more than any other United player since he joined and has just one goal to his name – a rebound from a penalty.

The former Arsenal man is undoubtedly class and moving in the middle of the season is not easy, but that doesn’t excuse him being quite this bad.

Score: 4/10

Romelu Lukaku

26 goals in 39 games for United looks on the face of it like a decent first season, but from watching Romelu Lukaku play it’s easy to see why he hasn’t won over everyone at Old Trafford.

The Belgium international is another expensive purchase, coming at £75million, according to BBC Sport, and for that you’d expect him to be closer to Harry Kane in the running for the Golden Boot. Even £34m winger Mohamed Salah has out-scored him this season.

Romelu Lukaku has blown hot and cold for Manchester United

Lukaku also went on a long goal drought and has largely disappeared in the big games, so while it’s a decent start, it’s not exactly ‘good’ just yet.

Score: 5/10

Paul Pogba

A player who divides opinion, but it’s certainly not been what we’d hoped it would be from Paul Pogba in his massively hyped-up second spell at Manchester United.

The France international became the most expensive footballer in the world when rejoining the Red Devils last season, and so far it’s only really been flashes of brilliance from him.

Pogba is a huge talent with plenty to offer and it’s fair to say Mourinho probably hasn’t played him in his best role often enough, though that does not excuse his lack of impact, especially in the second half of this season.

Score: 5.5/10

Manchester United will have expected more from Paul Pogba

Nemanja Matic

A fine signing from Mourinho’s old club Chelsea, Nemanja Matic certainly ‘gets’ Mourinho’s football and is his assistant manager on the pitch.

The Serbian has his limitations and is perhaps a little too old to be considered a long-term option, but he’s won over plenty of fans in his first season at Old Trafford.

Plus that stoppage time stunner against Crystal Palace was absolutely legendary – if only he did it more!

Score: 6.5/10

Eric Bailly

A really top defender in the making, Eric Bailly in many ways looks the best signing of the Mourinho era, though he just misses out on top spot due to his injury problems.

Hopefully when we see more of the Ivorian, he can continue to develop into a truly world class centre-back and a key player for this club for many years to come.

Score: 7/10

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is surely Jose Mourinho’s best Manchester United signing

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Okay he’s barely been seen this season due to his injury trouble, but what an impact he made last year.

Arriving on a free transfer, Zlatan Ibrahimovic showed that even in his mid-30s he can do his stuff in the Premier League as well after many years of doubters from these shores despite all his exploits abroad.

The Swede finished as United’s top scorer with 28 goals, scored winners in both the Community Shield and EFL Cup final – there’s not a lot more you can ask for really.
