Which defender should Manchester United sign on deadline day?

Manchester United are being linked with a host of centre-backs ahead of transfer deadline day as Jose Mourinho looks to make this crucial addition to his squad.

It’s been a frustrating summer for United after finishing so far behind Manchester City last season, and tightening up defensively is understandably a priority for Mourinho.

The options are there, but who would you stick your money on the Red Devils finally landing as rumours today barely make things any clearer?

If you do fancy scouring through bettingsites.ltd to find the best places for odds on the transfer window and beyond, these seem the four leading candidates to move to Old Trafford, from least likely to most likely…

Jerome Boateng

These rumours won’t die down, but we’d be fairly surprised if this one happened. The latest is that the Germany international could join United on loan, but he doesn’t seem to be their first choice.

Given Boateng’s recent injury record, it seems a bit of a risky move to be pursuing, though at this point fans probably wouldn’t complain!

Jose Gimenez

A player whose name has just come up today, Jose Gimenez is undoubtedly one of the finest centre-backs in Europe, but United have surely left it too late to bring him in.

Gimenez is too important to Atletico Madrid and though they have a little longer to replace him with foreign clubs able to bring players in until the end of August, this one seems very ambitious, but perhaps worth putting money on if you’re brave.

Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire reportedly wants the move to Old Trafford, but Leicester City are seemingly not prepared to sell for less than £75million.

It remains to be seen if the Red Devils will stump up that kind of cash for a player who can’t really be considered the best option available, so we’re unsure he’ll succeed in pushing this deal through.

Toby Alderweireld

Surely the most likely, Toby Alderweireld has been linked with United all summer and Tottenham will surely still try to cash in on him while they can.

The Belgian would have a release clause of just £25million next summer, so if Spurs can get even just £50m for him now, it would surely be worth it for a player not in their plans – thereby making this deal the most likely on here by our reckoning.
