Barcelona identify key solution in midfield after failing to land first choice target

Barcelona have reportedly set their sights on Kevin Kampl of RB Leipzig as a possible alternative to Frenkie de Jong after missing out on the Ajax youngster this summer.

The 27-year-old has had spells at various clubs including RB Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen while earning 27 caps for Slovenia.

In turn, he has accumulated plenty of experience at a high level and has seemingly now emerged on Barcelona’s transfer radar with just a week remaining in the transfer window in Spain.

According to Sport, having missed out on De Jong, Kampl could now emerge as the alternative option to bolster Ernesto Valverde’s options in midfield with a view of being able to rest Sergio Busquets and not rely so heavily on him to feature every week as he did with many key individuals last year.

From that perspective, it would make sense to target a player like Kampl to act as quality depth, but it remains to be seen if Barca’s interest is genuine first, and in turn if a deal can be done with time running out.

The Catalan giants have been busy reshuffling that area of the squad, with Andres Iniesta and Paulinho leaving the Nou Camp this summer.

However, both Arthur and Arturo Vidal arrived to fill the voids, but as they look to try and compete on various fronts this season, perhaps more is needed to ensure that Valverde can rotate if necessary.

As noted by Sport, with their first choice in De Jong set to remain at Ajax this season, Barcelona have had to consider alternative options and it seems as though Kampl will be paired with a move until the transfer deadline passes for Spanish clubs next Friday.
