Top 10 clubs in the world based on social media followers: Manchester United 3rd, Arsenal above Liverpool, Man City surprisingly high on list

In modern football, the amount of followers a club has on social media is something that some fans seem to actually care about, despite them just being numbers on a screen at the end of the day.

Social media is used daily by millions of people worldwide, and it’s definitely something that has become huge in the footballing world in recent years.

And in fairness, whether it be on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, having a big presence on social media is definitely something that can help a club and their fans.

So, with the help of an image we’ve found online, we decided to take a look at the football clubs with the biggest followings on social media.

10th – PSG – 66.7M followers

At tenth place on our list is, unsurprisingly, one of the biggest clubs in world football: PSG. The French side have come on leaps and bounds on and off the pitch ever since they were taken over by Qatar Sports Investments a few years back.

Having been a side that were battling against relegation in the mid-2000’s, PSG are now one of the club’s biggest and best sides, boasting a squad that contains players such as Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Edinson Cavani, three of the biggest stars in the game.

PSG currently have around 66.7 million followers across all their social media platforms, with the majority of these followers coming from Facebook.

66.7 million numbers is an impressive total for PSG to have, we just wonder whether they’d have that much if they weren’t taken over by billionaire owners earlier this decade…

9th – Liverpool – 67.1M followers

Up next on our list is the mighty Liverpool, a team who have had a lot to shout about of late given their impressive form in the Premier League.

It’s no surprise to see the Reds on this list, as the Merseyside club are one of the biggest on the planet, and have been for a number of decades.

Having dominated English and European football in the 1970’s and 1980’s, Liverpool have managed to build up an immense following over the years, something that clearly shows given their place on this list.

The hype surrounding Salah, Firmino and Mane would’ve surely helped Liverpool achieve a place on this last

Jurgen Klopp’s side have an astonishing 67.1 million followers across all social media sites, a total that puts them just ahead of 10th placed PSG, a surprising stat given the two side’s contrasting histories.

8th – Juventus – 69.4M

At eighth place on our list is Italy’s biggest club, Juventus, who are able to boast an online following of just under 70 million.

Again, like PSG and Liverpool, it’s no surprise at all to see Juve on this list given that they are one of the best clubs on the planet, something that’s been apparent for quite some time now.

We do wonder whether the Old Lady would be as high up on this last as they are had they not signed Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid last summer, as the 33-year-old is one of the most famous people in the world, and his arrival would’ve definitely given Juve’s social media following a hefty boost.

Ronaldo’s arrival at Juve would’ve definitely boosted their social media following

But, with or without Ronaldo, Juve are still able to boast about being one of the biggest and most supported clubs in football, something that’s backed up by their place on this list.

7th – Man City – 72.3M

Now onto one of the more surprising teams on this list: Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, who sit in 7th place in our top 10 with a whopping 72.3M followers across all platforms.

We say that Man City’s place on this list is surprising as, despite their success in recent times, the Citizens haven’t exactly been at the top of world football for as long as Juventus or Liverpool have.

City only managed to win their first Premier League title just six years ago in 2012, and before that, they were in the 2nd division as early as 2002!

However, given the fact they received a takeover back in 2008, and have won numerous amounts of silverware since, we still expected the club to have a fairly large following on social media, just not one as large as this!

6th – Arsenal – 76.2M

Sitting in sixth place, just ahead of Man City, is Unai Emery’s Arsenal, a club who’ve been at the top of the football world a number of times in the past 20-30 years.

Winning numerous first division and Premier League titles, as well as going an entire league season unbeaten back in 2003/04, combined with reaching a Champions League final and claiming a number of other pieces of silverware as well, the Gunners are undoubtedly one of the top sides on the planet.

Arsenal manage to come above City and Liverpool in the list of the world’s most followed clubs

Despite having not won a league title since 2004, we’re still not surprised to see the north London side claiming a place on this list, although we were fairly shocked to see them three places above Liverpool given the two sides’ histories.

Being able to boast 76.2 million social media followers across all platforms, Arsenal manage to take sixth place on our list, we’re just surprised to not see them in fourth place for once!

5th – Bayern Munich – 79.2M

Ahead of Arsenal (not for the first time) is German giants Bayern Munich, a club all fans would’ve expected to see place highly on this list given the reputation they’ve amassed over the years.

Niko Kovac’s side are undoubtedly the biggest side Germany have produced, with Bayern consistently dominating the Bundesliga over the years, something that’ll have contributed to their place on this list.

Like many German clubs, Bayern’s Twitter and Facebook pages are well worth a look at, with their posts ranging from informative updates to banter between their fans and other football clubs!

We’re slightly surprised to see they only have 3M more followers than Arsenal, but we’re sure Bayern fans won’t care given their recent record against the Gunners in the Champions League…

4th – Chelsea – 90.1M

Just missing out on a top three spot on our list is Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea, a club who’ve come on leaps and bounds as a whole since being taken over by Roman Abramovich in 2003.

The Blues have become one of the world’s best and biggest clubs in recent years thanks to significant financial backing from their Russian owner, something that would’ve definitely helped them amass such as huge online following.

Abramovich taking over Chelsea in 2003 has helped them become one of the world’s biggest clubs

The west London club have won five Premier League title and a Champions League, as well as numerous FA Cup and League Cups, since 2003, a feat that’s seen them become one of England’s biggest sides.

We’re a little bit shocked to see them have around 11 million followers more than Bayern Munich, however this isn’t the first time the Blues have got one over on the German giants (see 2012 Champions League final).

3rd – Manchester United – 137M

Given the fact that they’re the most successful club England have ever had, it’s not a surprise to see Man United so high up on this list.

Following their numerous Premier League and Champions League title wins over the years, United have manage to establish themselves as one of the world’s most supported clubs, something that’s backed up by their very high place on this list.

The Red Devils have a whopping 47 million more followers than 4th-placed Chelsea, something that we presume is down to the club’s huge amount of success in the past 20-30 years.

Despite having such a high following, United still have a long way to go if they are to break into the top two clubs with the highest online following, and given the two sides that occupy the top two spots, we think they may be waiting quite a while for that to happen…

2nd – Barcelona – 240M

Just missing out on top spot on this list is Spanish giants Barcelona, a team we’re not simply not surprised at all to see claim such a high spot on this list.

The Blaugrana have managed to clock up such a high number of followers through their vast amount of success over the years, as well as the club having some of the best players ever to have played for them.

Barcelona’s success would’ve played a big part in them amassing such a huge online presence

Having stars like Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi, Diego Maradona and Neymar all play for Barca over the years certainly won’t have done their hopes of gaining a huge online following any harm.

And we’re sure the club are only going to get more popular as time goes on, especially if they carry on winning trophies like they have been doing in recent years…

1st – Real Madrid – 242.9M

Sitting atop of our list is, unsurprisingly, Real Madrid, a club who’ve been at the very top of the football food chain for as long as we can remember.

Los Blancos are one of the most supported teams on Earth, and we’d’ve been very shocked to see them at any place other than first on this list given how big they are.

The Spanish giants’ 13 European Cup wins, as well as 33 La Liga titles, would’ve, of coursed, played a massive part in them being able to obtain such a large online following.

Real’s dominance in Spain and Europe over the years has played a big part in them amassing such a following

And if they keep on winning Champions League like they have done in recent times, we can only see them extending their lead over Barcelona as the club with the biggest online following.
