Keep or sell? Verdict on every player in the Chelsea squad, with ten who should be on the transfer list

It was another bad night for Chelsea as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Burnley, missing out on a chance to punish the bad weekends of their top four rivals Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham.

The Blues could be in for a very difficult summer if they miss out on qualification for the Champions League, with some big names perhaps likely to leave if that happens, while recruiting replacements will be that bit harder.

On top of that, Chelsea might even be facing a transfer ban, though while there’s still a chance of it being delayed with an appeal, we take a look at the players CFC just need to be selling in the next transfer window.

Here’s our verdict on every player in Sarri’s squad and whether the club should be keeping or selling this summer…

Kepa Arrizabalaga – KEEP

It’s not been the most convincing first season from the Chelsea goalkeeper, but Kepa is young and can improve, having shown some glimpses of real potential.

Antonio Rudiger – KEEP

Not the best centre-back in the world by any means, but a solid and reliable performer who genuinely seems to care.

Marcos Alonso – SELL

Chelsea fans will want to see the back of this guy. It’s been a poor season from Marcos Alonso, who doesn’t look worth keeping around.

Jorginho – SELL

This might be rash, but Jorginho has been a real flop in his first season in the Premier League, and while Sarri may have been able to build his Napoli team around him, these tactics don’t like working here. With the Italy international gone, N’Golo Kante can return to his natural deep-lying role and talented young players like Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ethan Ampadu can get more of a look-in next season.

Danny Drinkwater – SELL

Barely seen at Chelsea since he joined. A bizarre signing that has unsurprisingly not worked out. Time to sell, if anyone will buy him.

N’Golo Kante – KEEP

One of the best in the world in his position and a hugely important part of this Chelsea squad. N’Golo Kante must be kept on, and hopefully given more playing time in defensive midfield next season.

Ross Barkley – KEEP

A player who divides opinion, Ross Barkley has had a decent season and seems worth keeping around at least as a squad player.

Gonzalo Higuain – KEEP

Gonzalo Higuain has made a slow start since joining CFC on loan from Juventus, but we’ve seen glimpses of his world class finishing ability as he starts to settle at Stamford Bridge. The Blues are unlikely to be able to find or afford anyone much better, so best stick with the player they have the option to buy already.

Eden Hazard – SELL

A tough call, but it looks unlikely Eden Hazard is going to sign that new contract. With that in mind, is it really worth another season of distractions before he inevitably walks on a free? Much of this will depend on the transfer ban situation, but we would sell now and move on while there’s still good money to be made from his exit.

Pedro – KEEP

Still going strong and doing the goods for Chelsea, Pedro should be kept around for at least another season, having shown himself to be an important part of the squad under Sarri.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek – KEEP

A huge talent finally getting the recognition he deserves, Ruben Loftus-Cheek must surely be kept at all costs this summer, with mid-table Premier League clubs sure to be sniffing about if he remains unconvinced over his role in west London.

Willy Caballero – KEEP

A fine backup goalkeeper, no need to get rid of Willy Caballero.

Mateo Kovacic – RETURN TO SENDER

On loan from Real Madrid, Mateo Kovacic has not made much of an impact at Chelsea and surely needs to be sent back to the Bernabeu at the end of the season.

Olivier Giroud – KEEP

According to Transfermarkt, Olivier Giroud’s current Chelsea contract expires this summer, but the club still have an option to extend it for another year. Given how the France international has shone in limited appearances, we think he’s well worth keeping around and perhaps even giving more playing time to next season.

Callum Hudson-Odoi – KEEP

A no-brainer. Callum Hudson-Odoi has not been played as much as he should have this season, so there will inevitably be transfer rumours about his situation this summer, but it’s essential for the club’s future that they keep this ready-made Hazard replacement and potential future legend.

Davide Zappacosta – SELL

A player who hasn’t done enough since he joined to justify holding on to any longer. Davide Zappacosta is an obvious one for the transfer list.

Willian – SELL

In decline for some time now, it’s time to offload Willian and build around players like Hudson-Odoi and the incoming Christian Pulisic.

Gary Cahill – RELEASE

This won’t be a sale as he’s nearing the end of his contract, but it’s surely goodbye to a Chelsea legend in Gary Cahill this summer after being frozen out of the first-team squad this season.

Andreas Christensen – KEEP

A talented young player whose development has stalled somewhat, it’s still surely worth keeping hold of Andreas Christensen and trying to help him get back to his best.

Cesar Azpilicueta – KEEP

A Chelsea legend and important leader in this squad, there’s no doubt Cesar Azpilicueta needs to be kept around at Stamford Bridge.

David Luiz – RELEASE

It’s not been a good season for David Luiz, and Chelsea can surely do better in defence, either in the transfer market or by bringing someone up from the academy.

Rob Green – RELEASE

A weird signing, we assume Rob Green will be shown the door after a single season at Chelsea.

Emerson Palmieri – KEEP

A player who has improved a great deal since joining, Emerson Palmieri has surely earned his chance to be Chelsea’s first choice at left-back next season.

Ethan Ampadu – KEEP

Harshly overlooked again this season, exciting young midfielder Ethan Ampadu needs to be kept around and given more of a role next season. Worst case scenario, perhaps send him out on loan, but definitely don’t sell if it can be avoided.
