5 reasons it’s Liverpool’s year to take the title off Man City, featuring Naby Keita, Oxlade-Chamberlain, and…Harry Maguire

4) Rivals in a bad way

It seems clear already that it’s going to be another two-horse race for the title, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham all in a pretty bad way.

Spurs would perhaps have looked the most likely to break into the title running, but a bizarrely dire run of form in 2019 surely points towards a big task for Mauricio Pochettino to even get them into the top four.

Chelsea’s problems are well documented with their inexperienced new manager, transfer ban and loss of Eden Hazard, while Arsenal and United remain in the process of what looks like being lengthy rebuilding jobs at both clubs.

5) More to come from some players

Looking around this Liverpool squad, it’s easy to argue that it hasn’t even peaked yet, which is a frightening thought if you’re a fan of City or pretty much anyone else.

LFC secured a record-breaking points total and won the Champions League last term despite missing quality players like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Joe Gomez for much of the campaign, with both surely having their best years ahead of them and set to play more of a key role this time.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain hasn’t even got going for Liverpool yet

Elsewhere, Naby Keita is a top player who hasn’t shown half of what he’s really capable of yet at Anfield, while even the excellent Fabinho got off to a slightly slow start last term and can become even better. Meanwhile, young players like Trent Alexander-Arnold will no doubt continue to improve, while other talents like Rhian Brewster, Harvey Elliott and Sepp van den Berg are waiting in the wings.

It’s going to be close again, that’s for sure, but there really does seem good reason to believe Liverpool could just edge it this year.
