“We are here to win it” – Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez discusses finally winning an international trophy in the Lionel Messi era

Argentina took a fundamental step in its qualification for the quarterfinals of the Copa América 2021 with the victory against Uruguay.

In the Lionel Messi era, Argentina has yet to win an international trophy, which is the major blemish in his career.

However, following the performance from the 33-year-old against Uruguay, Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez did not hesitate to express his main desire: to be champion.

Martínez has stated to the media where Marca Claro relayed his comments regarding the victory, allowing them to gain confidence after a series of draws where Argentina surrendered the lead. A win over Uruguay, who is one of the favorites, has helped the La Albiceleste believe they can finally win that international trophy in the Messi era.

“We were missing the victory as a group, we came with a bit of a bitter taste because we played well and we could not win and they scored goals in which we could have done a little better defensively, today we defended first and attacked later, and it was incredible solidity,” Martínez said.

Finally, the Aston Villa shot-stopper spoke about why they have this newfound confidence apart from their victory over Uruguay. Having Messi on their squad helps, but Martínez also adds other details as to why he thinks Argentina can win the Copa América.

“We are here to win it. It is the goal we dream of, we have the best in the world and a good coach who gives us a plan every game, and we will win it. We have a barbarian team, anyone who wants to do the job well, the coach gives confidence to many players and that is good for the group,” Martínez said.

  1. ………..

Arteta only stumbled upon trophy last 2seasons…!

This is evident in him omitting the players who won him the trophy…

Imagine he sold Martinez and loaned out Ainsley and Willock….

Believe me, if Mustafi and Leno had not been injured towards the end of that season he arrived, he would have played them ahead of other guys and we would not have struck luck with the fa cup and community shield trophies.

He wouldn’t reconcile with Guendozi and hates Saliba…….

Arteta is seeming to me like a fluke.

This current Arsenal team basically needs 3 players: First, a big strong athletic centre back (or give Saliba a chance to partner Gabriel), second is a big strong athletic defensive midfielder ( or coach Willock and Guendozi into the role, but he Arteta himself, isn’t the kind of coach who can develop a player), and thirdly is a modern attacking midfielder (or coach the likes of nelson, nketiah, martinelli, folarin or Jules into the role)….

We just need one more player in each of those 3 positions to complement what we already have. Arteta should not turn himself into another Wenger pls….. We love Arteta as a person, but whether he’d move the Arsenal team forward is a big question.
