Arsenal suffer major injury blow as midfielder ruled out for ‘considerable spell’

Despite winning all four of their opening matches and consequently sitting top of the Premier League, Arsenal’s good fortune has come to an end.

Defensive midfielder Mohamed Elneny, who was in action last weekend against Marco Silva’s Fulham, is reportedly set for a ‘considerable spell’ on the sidelines after picking up a ‘significant injury’.

That’s according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who claims the Egypt international is facing a prolonged period on the treatment table.

This latest injury will serve as a major blow to Mikel Arteta, who has been frequently rotating between the 30-year-old and Thomas Partey.

However, with Partey also suffering from a muscle issue, Elneny’s latest injury could not have come at a worse time.

When it comes to potential stand-ins, Arteta still has young midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga at his disposal, as well as veteran midfielder and former captain Granit Xhaxa.

The Gunners’ next run of fixtures includes a home tie against Steven Gerrard’s struggling Aston Villa and a trip to Old Trafford to face rivals Manchester United before their first group tie in the Europa League against FC Zurich takes place in Switzerland.

  1. We still seem to do our transfer dealings as and when it is needed there seems to be no forward planning we have needed a new midfielder for the whole of this transfer window yes we have strengthened in other areas but midfield was a major area to be looked at

  2. It’s a blessing in disguise. Popular opinion was that the central or Defensive midfield needs reinforcemnts since January with Partey irregularity but Arsenal did not try to sign anyone. Instead they brought in an attacking midfielder. It’s a blessing because they still have 2 days to bring in someone.

  3. That’s right we have been screaming for backup for Tom, that’s what stopped us from getting top 4. Can’t believe we’ve left this so late in the window, this will probably cost us a new winger and ultimately top 4 or higher. These are over sites insanity doing the same thing over again expecting a different result. We need to get real cover before Thursday. Hopefully a top free agent so we can still get that winger before we burn out Saka, just as we did with Jack Wiltshire.

  4. The technicians know better. All the shouting from journalists, pundits and supporters about the midfield have gone on deaf ears since January. In the place of Vieira would have been a defensive midfielder.
Now they must go and get Fofana from Lens

  5. we are still got a transfer dealing 3 new face if possible like Zaha,Tielisman and Neto cause since we have not rich 10th matches injury has followed the key players so how are we going to allow his parasites to attack our plants
Edu try much for the new faces

  6. Remember Bissouma was available for 25 mil and wanted to come to Arsenal. Arsenal did not bite. So he went to Tottenham. Who in their right mind thought Partey was going to play even half a season?
