“We were in control” – Thomas Frank on Brentford’s comfortable victory over West Ham United

Thomas Frank said that he wants to place as high as possible with Brentford after their 2-0 win over West Ham confirmed a top-half finish for his side.

Both sides were coming into this match off the back of varying results, with Frank and Brentford losing 1-0 to Liverpool last weekend, while West Ham will have been buoyant following their 2-1 comeback win over AZ Alkmaar in midweek.

However, it was Brentford that looked like the ones playing with a win under their belt, and midway through the first half, they took the lead when Bryan Mbeumo curled a shot in from the edge of the box.

Twenty minutes later, the Bees doubled their lead when Yoane Wissa headed home following a flick-on from a Mathias Jensen long-throw.

That gave the Hammers a mountain to claim and other than a disallowed Danny Ings goal in the second half due to a handball in the build-up, Brentford cruised to victory and Frank, speaking to Premier League Productions (quotes via BBC Sport), felt that the win was the most convincing in history.

It was a very good performance. It is the most convincing 2-0 win in history. We were in complete control throughout the game.”

Frank touched on the two goals his side scored, praising Wissa for filling the void upfront in the absence of Ivan Toney.

For the first goal, we won it high, had a very quick transition and produced a very good goal. The long throw paid off again for the second, we had five, six, seven good chances too.

I’m so happy with Yoane Wissa that he got a well-deserved goal. We needed him to step up with Ivan Toney out and he did that.”

Wissa’s header from close range ended a route one move from Brentford

The win for Brentford means that they are guaranteed to finish in the top ten of the Premier League for the first time ever and Frank revealed that he now wants to finish as high as possible, with 6th the best position they can end the season in if results go their way in the final two games of the season.

Finishing in the top half is an unbelievable result. Now we’d like to climb as high as possible.”

Their next match comes on Saturday afternoon, when they face a struggling Spurs side at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
