He won titles with Leceister, a whole lot more with Celtic and while he has a near perfect career thus far O’Neill has yet to take a club into the upper echelon of the league. However, he does fulfill the one key criteria for being the new Villa manager: Anything other than David O’Leary.
The Irishman has never been one to take a job out of desperate, turning down clubs left and right since taking a break from the game to care for his wife, so one imagines that O’Neill has been given some guarantees of transfer funds this window.
If that’s the case, one wonders what Villa might achieve next season. If O’Neill is as good as everyone makes him out to be surely a UEFA cup spot isn’t out of the question.
