Ben Thatcher Should Be Beaten With Sticks

mendes_stretcher.jpgBen Thatcher is a lot of things – a left back for Manchester City, a former Tottenham and Wimbledon player and one time England hopeful. But in reality, he’s just a bit of a prat and a whole lot of crazy.

The FA is investigating his carefully thought out execution of Pedro Mendes against Portsmouth that left the Portugese midfielder in a seizure by the advertising boards (around the 4 minute mark in the video after the jump).

But while their ban will probably be lengthy it almost certainly will not be enough. Going at someone with the intent of hurting them, targeting the head no less, is not something new for Thatch – or “Crazy Asshole” to his friends – as he delivered a similarly disturbing blow to Sunderland’s Nicky Summerbee a few years ago (photo after the jump).

Harry Redknapp summed it up nicely,

“I knew exactly what was coming five seconds before it happened,” said Redknapp.

“As soon as I saw Ben Thatcher running into the corner, I knew what was coming. I would have bet my life on it.

“Off the field, you could not meet a nicer boy. Unfortunately, on the pitch, he is capable of doing things like that. It was an horrendous challenge and totally out of order.

The FA may ban him for a few matches, a few months, but is it enough? Should the police get involved if Thatchy is using football as a way to freely assault people with no legal consequence time and time again?

Maybe, but whatever the footballing penalty one thing is for sure: Ben should also be taken to the town square and beaten by children with socks full of pennies.
