Despite being happily stepping up to fire home a penalty, being subjected to boos, chants of Judas, and having his locker filled with feces at halftime, Jermaine Defoe is still hoping that West Ham stay in the Premiership,
“I’d like to see the club stay up. I have still got a lot of friends at West Ham. I played for the club, it is still in my heart,” said Defoe.
“They gave everything against us. Unfortunately they lost the game.
“That’s what happens when you are struggling at the bottom. You get no luck.
“We needed the points as well but if they could stay up it would be excellent.”
One imagines he may not have been so amiable had Tottenham not come back to win the match at the death, but this gesture will surely mean that the England striker receives warm applause and a cheer the next time he’s at Upton Park.
