The world of Premiership transfer gossip is full of nonsense, but some nonsense is more interesting that the other nonsense. Speculation is rife in the likes of the Mirror, Daily Mail, Times, Sun and… err… Tribal Football all do their best to predict and/or completely make up the future.
Here’s our opinion on the Premiership transfer rumours we’ve read in the papers and around the net… and if you have any thoughts, pop em in the comments.
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is interested in Deportivo La Coruna striker Javier Arizmendi, sending scouts to watch the young striker in Spain on a number of occasions.CaughtOffside Says: So far, Benitez’ record with signings from La Liga has been a bit scattergun, with few resounding successes. Sort of like Wenger’s focus on France, except with much worse results. So jury is very much out ont his one.
Tottenham are lining up a £2m summer swoop for Leyton Orient defender Brian Saah because of concerns over Ledley King’s knee and foot problems.
CaughtOffside Says:Ledley King Out + Leyton Orient defender In = Feces flung at White Hart Lane.
Tottenham are tracking Germany defender Christoph Metzelder, who plays for Borussia Dortmund.
CaughtOffside Says: Much better. Metzelder is a giant of a centre back and the sort of player who would do well in the Premiership. A significantly better choice than the bloke above, and wouldn’t result in Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy being fed his own toes.
Liverpool are targeting Scunthorpe striker Billy Sharp in a £2m swoop.
CaughtOffside Says:Pacy, young, good finisher. English? He’s already at an age (21) where he’ll be hoping to play regularly and a little too old to be considered a “prospect” that Liverpool can really help develop. So given that US funding is on its way, we think this one is bollocks. Rafa is going to be going for established stars or teenage wonderkids to improve an already strong squad.
Besiktas boss Jean Tigana wants to sign Sheffield United’s Turkish Under-21 international striker Colin Kazim-Richards.
CaughtOffside Says: We like Kazim-Richards, good on the ball and should turn out to be a decent Premiership player – worthy of earning a spot on another club in England rather than having to deal with the various unsavory things that happen in the Turkish league.
Portsmouth are chasing Helsingborg star McDonald Mariga in a £250,000 swoop that would make the midfielder the first Kenyan to play in the Premiership.
CaughtOffside Says:Apparently he can run all day… Wahay!
Everton want Crewe’s young star Billy Jones.
CaughtOffside Says:Exactly the kind of no-frills, rugged player that would fit in well with Everton. He’s got a bit of an attacking side, and is versatile enough to line up in multiple positions. And he’s been dubbed the “Next Jamie Carragher”. All of this information comes to us via our current FM2007 game.
Derby want Matthew Etherington from West Ham if the two clubs swap divisions.
CaughtOffside Says: Etherington is going to be a staple of newly promoted sides for years to come. His end product is far too crap for most truly ambitious clubs, but he’s quite pacy and can dribble about randomly making him useful to Championship sides.
