The world of Premiership transfer gossip is full of nonsense, but some nonsense is more interesting that the other nonsense. Speculation is rife in the likes of the Mirror, Daily Mail, Times, Sun and… err… Tribal Football all do their best to predict and/or completely make up the future.
Here’s our opinion on the Premiership transfer rumours we’ve read in the papers and around the net… and if you have any thoughts, pop em in the comments.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho wants to sign Benni McCarthy but Blackburn have insisted the striker is not for sale.CaughtOffside: A poor man’s Drogba. Well, in Chelsea’s case a really rich man’s Drogba. But McCarthy would certainly be very capable in the single striker role or even partnering the man himself. His success alongside Jason Roberts at Blackburn showed that having two brutes up front can work. Mourinho also knows the man quite well from his Porto days, when he actually could win the Champions League.
Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce hopes to sign either PSG defender David Rozehnal, Marseille’s Habib Beye or Liverpool’s Sami Hyypia this week.CaughtOffside: And so the Newcastle move into a new, glorious era.
Tottenham boss Martin Jol has joined the race for Feyenoord wing-back Royston Drenthe. Drenthe is an early candidate for Player of the Tournament at this month’s U21 European Championships and has caught the eye of Jol. Aston Villa are also keen on Drenthe, who can play at left-back and in an attacking role.CaughtOffside: Drenthe has arguably been Holland’s best player, then again he’s also literally playing against a bunch of kids. Another hybrid left back at Spurs would mean that Lee, Bale, Assou Ekotto and Drenthe can spend next season struggling to figure out what to do on the pitch.
Jol is preparing a £3million swoop for the Inter Milan hardman Marco Materazzi, 33, whose experience will help stabalise a back line that struggled when being rotated last season.CaughtOffside: Materazzi has enjoyed a successful career since leaving the Premiership and might fancy another go with his career winding down. Nourredine Naybet had a nice impact in a similar ‘old guy teaches young guys stuff’ role a couple of years ago at White Hart Lane so it might provide the experienced cover for Ledley King that Ricardo Rocha apparently doesn’t.
Juventus and Roma are targeting Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy at around 12 million.CaughtOffside:Nothing says trouble like Craig Bellamy moving to a football league that has ‘Ultras’ delivering Nazi salutes in the stand. We can’t imagine a good ol lad like Bellers wanting to move to a foreign country, though, especially when Premiership offers are likely to be plentiful.
West Ham are ready to splash £12million on Benfica ace Fernandes, who impressed at Everton last season.CaughtOffside:Third time lucky for Fernandes in the Premiership, he looked like a good prospect at the end of last season, putting in tough tackles, scoring goals and generally doing the sorts of things that English players get called ‘Legend’ for. His enthusiasm can leave massive tactical holes all of the pitch, but that never stopped Stevie G.
Birmingham are watching Fulham’s Zat Knight for availability.CaughtOffside:Great start for a promoted club is to be linked to Zat Knight. Too bad Titus Bramble has already been snapped up or Steve Bruce could sleep easy each week.
After bidding £3.2m for Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen, Sunderland boss Roy Keane will also trying to sign Chelsea’s Geremi and Man Utd striker Giuseppe Rossi.CaughtOffside:Keano has shown a bit of shrewdness about his transfer targets, or at least those being reported in the papers. A solid keeper and versatile midfielder with Premiership quality and experience will help steady the ship. Raiding United for young prospects is smart too, a bit of preferential treatment from his old boss for talented loanees could work out nicely.
