The race is on for that hallowed office next to Brian Barwick in Soho Square, but where is your money going? Here are the big names:
Jose Mourinho 7-2 – Oh please God yes, just what the team needs to be shaken up a bit. Might prolong Frank Lampard’s England career, though.
Martin O’Neill 9-2 – Another good option, but upset the FA by demanding his own coaches last time, they probably won’t be quite so concerned this time.
Luiz Felipe Scolari 6-1 – Another maverick, but surely a step too far. Also, probably wouldn’t fancy the job anyway.
Guus Hiddink 8-1 – Would be a good choice, but will he really want to give up Roman’s millions?
(NOTE: It is quite possible that all the top four candidates could reject the role, how embarrassing)
Fabio Capello 14-1 – Available, good track record, suave foreigner. Check, check, check. Past it with with no international experience, right up our street.
Alan Shearer 20-1 – Phil Collins left the country when Labour got into power. Surely a lot of people would be sorely tempted to go if Shearer does.
Coppell, Hughes and Venables come next, but, you know, be realistic. So, who are you backing?
