In response to past reports of Americans Tom Hicks and George Gillett sacking Rafa Benitez, £21.5million recruit Fernando Torres has asserted his trust in the manager in a public outcry. The fans have also condemned their view- however the chants were more personalized with yelling out his last name as “Beneathus” – with a banner being witnessed at their 4-0 win against Bolton stating ‘As Always We Are Focussing On Supporting Our Manager’. One cant deny the unity at Anfield, but their past history in England (with both Houllier and Benitez) has been dismal for a club of such stature.
New recruit Torres said:
“He cannot leave. The fans have given their verdict and it was clear.
“Benitez has created a team of people who are indebted to him. It’s certain if he goes many players will think about their futures. Benitez is not just another manager. He created a team and put his faith in players that owe him a lot.”
Liverpool have scored 21 goals in their past five games, and Mr Benitez’s job seems to be becoming more secure. However, in the end, the ‘buck’ stops with the owners, with fiscal reasoning seeming to play a major part. Hicks and Gillett willingly offered their hip pocket in the summer break in order to rebuild an apparent ‘uncomfortable’ team. Benitez must now hope for some sympathy from the new American owners, otherwise he can see his job at Anfield as good as over.
