French side turn down bid from Italian giants Fiorentina.
Arsenal and Newcastle have been placed on alert after it was revealed that St Etienne have turned down a bid from Fiorentina for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang according to talkSport.
The Ligue 1 star has been in scintiliating form this season for the French club, attracting the interest of a number of top European sides.
Aubameyang has hit the back of the net of 16 separate occasions for St Etienne and looks certain to leave the club come the summer.
The player, who has been dubbed the ‘African Neymar’ on account of his clinical finishing and trademark Mohawk haircut, has reportedly been the subject of a bid from Italian side Fiorentina.
St Etienne turned the bid down but Premier League sides will be desperate to make sure the Italian team don’t steal a march on them in the race for the player’s signature.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is known to be an admirer of the Gabon international and is keen to bring in attacking reinforcements to the club after becoming disappointed with the debut seasons of summer Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud.
But Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will be hoping to persuade Aubameyang to join the growing contingent of former Ligue 1 stars in the Newcastle dressing room as he looks for a replacement for Demba Ba, who joined Chelsea in the January transfer window.
