Napoli have turned down Chelsea’s initial approach for Edinson Cavani according to The Mirror.

The Stamford Bridge side reportedly made an offer of £25.5 million plus Fernando Torres but that is thought to have been turned down by the Serie A side.

Cavani is currently one of the most sought after striker in Europe after a number of highly impressive seasons for Napoli.

The club are resigned to losing him over the coming months though with Napoli President Aurelio Di Laurentiis having admitted earlier in the year that Cavani’s contract contained a £54 million release clause.

That has sparked the interest of a number of top European sides including the likes of PSG, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

But Chelsea had hoped to steal a march on their rivals by offering Fernando Torres as a part of a deal for Cavani.

Napoli recently appointed former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez to replace Walter Mazzarri, who is set to join Inter Milan.

Benitez knows Torres well from their times at Chelsea and Liverpool together and Chelsea were hoping to tempt Napoli by providing a ready-made replacement for Cavani that the new manager is known to be a fan of.

But Napoli have insisted that any club much match the release fee clause before the club will consider selling.
