The brilliant Argentina international made the apparent gesture, similar to that which former pop legend Michael Jackson would often do while performing live, as he was given the hook in the second half of los Blancos‘ 3-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu, with ex-Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Gareth Bale replacing him.
However, the 25-year-old has since come out to defend his actions, claiming it was just “a natural gesture”, while team-mate Sergio Ramos also subsequently released an image of himself on Instagram standing alongside a picture Jackson in apparent support of Di Maria.
“I did not want to do anything towards either the supporters or the coach as was being claimed,” the winger was quoted as saying on Real’s official website on Tuesday.
“It was a natural gesture that any man does, and all the more so when he is running.
“You do it a lot on the pitch. On television you can see that it lasts a millisecond. It’s nothing.
“It’s not like I was doing it on purpose for an extended period of time.”
Meanwhile, the Argentinian went on to dismiss recent speculation linking him with a move away from the Spanish capital during the January transfer window, with Premier League leaders Arsenal reportedly one of the teams interested in signing the player this month, saying he was “in very good shape and very happy” at Madrid and that manager Carlo Ancelotti had faith in him.
