The injury-ravaged Ghana international has largely found himself warming the substitutes’ bench at Stamford Bridge so far in this campaign, despite the fact that returning Blues head coach Jose Mourinho had insisted on the player coming back to the west London club from his loan spell with Real Madrid last summer.

And yet, the 31-year-old has so far featured in just the nine matches in total for the self-styled Special One all campaign long, only five of which have come in the Premier League and now with Essien said to be fearful of losing his starting place in his country’s lineup at this summer’s Fifa World Cup finals in Brazil, the holding midfielder now wants to quit the Bridge in search of more regular first-team football elsewhere.

However, Chelsea have still to give the green light to the move with Mou said to be concerned about letting one of his players join a rival club on the Continent that may end up playing the Blues later on in this season’s Uefa Champions League.
