Spurs Reignite Long-Running Interest In Unsettled Belgium Star

Centre back is currently out of favour in the Spanish capital.

Tottenham Hotspur may reignite their longstanding interest in coveted Atletico de Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld during the January transfer window after the highly rated young Belgium signalled his current unhappiness at the high-flying La Liga outfit, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

The north London club, along with the likes of Premier League rivals Liverpool, Newcastle United and Norwich City, were all originally keen on landing Alderweireld during the previous transfer window last summer.

However, all four top-flight outfits ultimately missed out in the centre back’s prized signature when Alderweireld instead opted to leave Eredivisie champions Ajax and sign for Atleti on a four-year deal instead.

But the 24-year-old has since endured a nightmare time of it at the Vincente Calderon, with the central defender having featured in just the nine matches in all competitions so far in this campaign for his new employers, only four of which have come in La Liga.

“I miss Ajax, their style of play, my ex-team-mates – at Atleti, I can’t be happy if I’m not playing,” said Alderweireld.

“The team is doing well and I continue to fight for my place, but I don’t think it’s my fault.”
