The experienced England international has found himself in the unfamiliar position this season of largely warming the substitutes’ bench with the west London club, with returning Blues boss Mourinho instead preferring to go with Spain right-back Cesar Azpilicueta in his place.

And with the 33-year-old’s rolling 12-month deal expiring on June 30 2014, rumours have been rife of late linking Cole with a move away from the west Londoners next season, with the player having been mentioned in the same breath as former club Arsenal, champions Manchester United and even Major League Soccer franchise the New York Red Bulls.

However, the self-styled Special One has now revealed that the attacking full back will after all be handed a one-year contract extension come the end of the campaign, with Mourinho saying: “He still has a future here and we want to renew his contract – but ask Thierry maybe he has a better idea.”
