The Red Devils head coach David Moyes, who is known to be a huge admirer of the Netherlands international, is understood to have approached the Serie A outfit last month regarding their 23-year-old.

However, the under-pressure Scot is believed to have been told by the Romans that the only way they would even consider selling Strootman was if United put a whopping €40m on the table.

And that is because the player has only been in the Italian capital since the beginning of this season, with the Dutchman joining Roma from Eredivisie outfit PSV Eindhoven last summer for an initial fee of €17m.

But already, Strootman has proved himself to be a fine addition to the Italians’ starting lineup, registering an impressive six goals and six assists in total in just his 23 matches in all competitions for his new team.

And even if United do return this summer for the player, his agent claims that his client is happy at the Stadio Olimpico.

“Kevin is very happy in Rome,” his representative said.

“He loves both the club and the city,” adding “he plans to stay a long time.”
