The coveted Germany international has been closely monitored by a whole host of big-name clubs from across the Continent of late, however, it is the north Londoners who are believed to be most interested in the German.

And if reports in Spain are now to be believed, then the Gunners did lodge a bid with Schalke during the winter window, however, the offer of 30m euros was not deemed enough to be able to persuade the Bundesliga side to part company with their star man.

In fact, Horst Heldt, Schalke’s sporting director, confirmed as much recently when he told RP-Online: “We have received an offer for our player from Arsenal, but it was not enough.”

However, it is still expected that Arsenal will return at the end of the season with a new and improved offer for the 20-year-old, who finally returned from an ankle injury in his side’s league encounter with Mainz on Friday night.
