Earlier this week, CaughtOffside brought you the exclusive story, that Liverpool were preparing a £40m bid for Edinson Cavani.

We believe that the club are readying a record £40m bid for the PSG forward, with Brendan Rodgers hoping to replace Uruguayan international Luis Suarez with his fellow countryman.

The Anfield boss has been given the green light to launch a big money bid for the 27-year-old Parc des Princes star despite having already forked out almost £90m on new signings thus far this summer.

Here are five this the player could bring to Liverpool, if he were to make the move to England this summer:

5) Goals, and lots of them

Cavani has maintained a healthy goal to game ratio throughout his years as a professional. After beginning his playing career with Danubio in Uruguay, he scored 141 goals in seven seasons in Italy, with three years at Napoli producing an impressive 104 goals in just 138 games. He then registered 25 times for new side PSG last season. Cavani has also scored 22 times for his country in 63 appearances.

4) Experience at the top level

Cavani has already gained a large amount of experience at the top level, playing in the Champions League for both Napoli and PSG, as well as starring at the World Cup. The Reds are fully aware that they would be buying a readymade star in the prime years of his career. While this is something the club have tended to avoid in recent times, favouring the approach of buying young, developing talent, it could prove a necessity if the Reds wish to replace Luis Suarez.

3) Top class replacement for Luis Suarez

Liverpool’s striking contingent currently consists of just Daniel Sturridge, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini – who could yet be tempted into a return to Sunderland, where he enjoyed a successful loan spell last season. Despite Rodgers recruiting seven new players already this summer, they are yet to replace the one major name that has left the club. Liverpool’s move for Lambert was complimented as a shrewd piece of business, a smart move for a player that could play a useful back-up role. However, Lambert is no Luis Suarez, and he will not score 31 Premier League goals next season. The club still need a new striker this summer.

2) Rejuvenate the fans

The Liverpool fans have so far been underwhelmed by the pre-season performances of Rickie Lambert, while the demoralising effect of losing Suarez was compounded by the collapse of the Reds £8.5m move for Loic Remy, who failed a medical. The supporters are crying out for a marquee signing, and a name like Cavani would certainly tick that box.

1) A completely different, powerful option

Liverpool were magnificent to watch last season, and scored goals for fun at times. However, if you were to be hyper-critical – they lacked a ‘Plan B’. With the likes of Iago Aspas and Victor Moses often the only attacking options of the Liverpool bench, the pressure was always on the same old names to produce the goods. Cavani would offer the Reds a completely new option – an aggressive, powerful marksman – an excellent target man, good in the air as well as with his feet.
