With the news that Eliaquim Mangala has signed for Premier League champions Manchester City for a huge reported fee of £42.9 million, the Premier League has a new entrant into its list of all-time most expensive defenders.

The former Porto man is in illustrious company on this list of English football’s ten most costly defensive buys, and will be hoping to emulate a number of them having arrived at Eastlands from FC Porto are a relatively unheralded player.

He joins these other nine defensive stalwarts in the list of the Premier League’s top ten most expensive defenders:

10) Jose Bosingwa (FC Porto to Chelsea)

The 10th most expensive Premier League defender was Jose Bosingwa, with Chelsea signing the Portuguese right back for a fee of £16.2m in 2008.
