The move is said to have cost the Old Trafford side £16m and sees winger Nani return to his former club on a season long loan deal.

Rojo has signed a five year contract and becomes Louis van Gaal’s third high-profile summer signing following the acquisitions of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw from Athletic Bilbao and Southampton respectively.

Having moved to the Portuguese capital from Spartak Moscow in July 2012 the adaptable defender impressed in Primeira Liga action and last term helped his Estádio José Alvalade side to a runners-up spot, their best finish in five years.

Marcos Rojo can play in either a central defensive role or at left-back and on completing the move to Man United stated;

“It is such an honour to say that I now play for Manchester United.

The Premier League is the most exciting league in the world and to have the chance to play in it for the world’s biggest club is a dream for me.

I am young and am very keen to continue to learn the game, so playing for such an experienced technical coach as Louis van Gaal is a fantastic opportunity for me.

I have joined United to work hard with my team-mates to win trophies and I know that the manager shares that ambition.”

Rojo took part in all Argentina’s World Cup fixtures, helping Alejandro Sabella’s side reach the final before bowing out to Germany in extra time.
