Manchester United are yet to respond to a proposal from AS Roma offering centre back Mehdi Benatia to the club, reports journalist Tancredi Palmeri, with the Serie A outfit having asked for €40 million plus an unidentified player in part exchange for the highly rated defender.
Benatia has been linked to a number of clubs this summer, including United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich, following a superb season that saw the Moroccan help his side to the second best defensive record in Serie A, as well as a second placed finish in the Italian league.
United have endured a frustrating start to the season under Louis van Gaal, with their defensive fragility exposed by both Swansea City and Sunderland as the Red Devils suffered with just a single point from their opening two matches.
A seasoned Serie A campaigner, Benatia’s performances for Roma over the last twelve months under Rudi Garcia have propelled him to a position of being considered as one of the leading defenders in European football.
The fee that is being asked is a significant one, however – particularly as United look set to secure a deal for Real Madrid Winger Angel di Maria for a fee in excess of £60m.
