Where Angel Di Maria Features In Manchester United’s Most Expensive XI Ever

The Red Devils team with the most expensive inclusions.

Having completed the club and British record transfer of Angel di Maria from Real Madrid for £59.7m, CaughtOffside picks out the most expensive XI in Manchester United’s history.

GK – David de Gea, £18m

Signed from Atletico Madrid in 2011 the then 20-year-old also became the most expensive goalkeeper in Premier League history, but has grown greatly in stature since that deal.

RB – Phil Jones, £17m

A utility man if ever there was one Jones has been used in central defence, at right-back and even in midfield since he made his move from Blackburn Rovers.

CB – Jaap Stam, £10.75m

Back in 1998 the Red Devils were moved to pay what was considered a colossal fee for this Dutchman, although Stam’s performances warranted the price and he was sold to Lazio at a profit in 2001.

CB – Rio Ferdinand, £30m

A year after Stam left, the club broke the British record transfer fee for this centre-back, who would go onto enjoy 12 years of success at Old Trafford before leaving on a free transfer for QPR this summer.

LB – Luke Shaw, £27m

A purchase made this year now as the Southampton youth player became the most expensive teenager in British history after completing his move from St Mary’s.

RM – Angel di Maria, £59.7m

The most recent deal now and a transfer that has eclipsed the previous British record holder of Fernando Torres, who moved to Chelsea from Liverpool for £50m in January 2011.

CM – Juan Sebastian Veron, £28.1m

Often considered a flop by many, the Argentine may not have quite lived up to the price-tag, but was still thought of as a top-class midfielder when he moved to Chelsea in 2003.

CM – Ander Herrera, £29m

Another new signing and a midfielder acquired from Athletic Bilbao this summer after more than 12 months of pursuit from the 13-time Premier League champions.

LM – Juan Mata, £37.1m

During David Moyes’ ill-fated 10 month tenure as manager the Scot tried to turn his fortunes around by paying a then club record fee to the Blues for this attacking midfielder.

ST – Dimitar Berbatov, £30.75m

Before Mata this Bulgarian striker was the holder of the club record transfer fee, although never quite managed to live up to the expectations after moving from Tottenham Hotspur.

ST – Wayne Rooney, £27m

Back in 2004 Rooney became the most expensive teenager ever and held that title for 10 years before new teammate Shaw took it from him and it has to be said the England international was worth the outlay.
