Manchester United could be set to make major changes to their squad before the summer transfer window closes, with Louis van Gaal preparing to offload three members of his squad and bring in three replacements.

The Red Devils have already spent big on the likes of Angel Di Maria, Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo this summer, but further additions could be made as van Gaal looks to improve on a poor start to the season.

United also endured a nightmare campaign last year as they finished in 7th place in the Premier League, and the Dutchman is under huge pressure to build a side that can challenge for the top four and for major trophies again.

Three deals are already in place for new signings to come in, but United will first hope to rid themselves of three unwanted members of their squad as well.

In – Daley Blind (Ajax)

Reports today suggest that a move for Ajax and Netherlands defender Daley Blind to finally sign for Manchester Uinited could be close. The versatile full-back, who can also operate as a central defender or defensive midfielder, impressed for Louis van Gaal’s side at this summer’s World Cup and will now make the latest fine addition to the squad at Old Trafford in this transfer window.

Out – Tom Cleverley (Aston Villa)

A move that looks ever closer to happening, Tom Cleverley looks set to finally end his nightmare time at United with a move to Aston Villa. The England international has clearly struggled with the weight of expectation heaped on his shoulders from a young age and no longer looks capable of filling the boots of legendary playmaker Paul Scholes. A move to a club like Villa could be just what he needs at this stage of his career, and United will be pleased to free up some space in the midfield area.

In – Nigel de Jong (AC Milan)

Coming in as a replacement in the middle of the park should be commanding Dutch midfield general Nigel de Jong. After struggling in their efforts to sign Juventus star Arturo Vidal, it looks as though the former Manchester City ace could now be van Gaal’s top target to give his side some bite in the midfield engine room. De Jong’s experience and battling qualities should make him an ideal arrival for this struggling squad, and a fine partner to complement the play of fellow new-boy Ander Herrera.

Out – Shinji Kagawa (Borussia Dortmund)

After a highly disappointing two years at United, Shinji Kagawa looks set to move back to his old club Borussia Dortmund in the next few days. The Japanese international first rose to prominence in the Bundesliga with some fine displays to attract the interest of United, and a return to Jurgen Klopp’s side seems the best option for him now as he doesn’t appear to feature in van Gaal’s plans for the new season, with the likes of Juan Mata and new signing Angel Di Maria now firmly ahead of him in the pecking order.

In – Juan Cuadrado (Fiorentina)

With Barcelona completing the signing of young Brazilian wing-back Douglas, it could now be that United will be the front-runners to snap up Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado. The exciting Colombian international has been linked with a host of big clubs all summer long and United have been among the favourites to bring him in, with Barca’s ended interest now giving them a clear path to do so, in what will give them a highly promising new-look midfield.

Out – Javier Hernandez (Juventus)

Despite failing to agree a deal for Vidal, United are ready to do business with Juventus for Mexican striker Javier Hernandez. The 26-year-old has struggled to reach top form in recent years and could do with a new challenge after growing stale at Old Trafford. His superb instincts in the penalty area have seen him become a top target for Juve and other big clubs, and it now looks as though Turin will be his destination before the transfer deadline.
