£159m: Rating and Analysis of Man United Six Star Summer Transfer Window Spend

A closer look at the Old Trafford side’s summer transfer business.

Ander Herrera
From: Athletic Bilbao
Cost: £29m
Rating: 7/10

Cultured midfielder did not come cheap but is a player with undoubted ability and may well be ready for the ‘step-up’ from San Mames to Old Trafford. However it is worth noting that the 25 year old is still to win a single Spanish national team cap and as such the jury is still very much out on whether the outlay is a worthy one.

Luke Shaw
From: Southampton
Cost: £27m
Rating: 7/10

Clearly the former Southampton man is a player amazing potential, the 19 year old already has two successful Premier League seasons under his belt and three England national team caps, but £27m is a big fee to pay for a teenager let alone a teenage left-back.

Marcos Rojo
From: Sporting Lisbon
Cost: £16m
Rating 6/10

The Argentine did impress at the World Cup but arguably isn’t all that proven at the highest level in club football terms and whilst he is versatile one wonders if he will be a good fit for a central defensive role, the area Louis van Gaal is very short on options in.

Angel di Maria
From: Real Madrid
Cost: £59m
Rating: 8/10

The rating may have been higher but clearly Man United paid a massive fee for the 26 year old Argentine and as such the Real Madrid man will have to make an instant impact. The winger is a veritable assist machine but will he cope within the overly physical confines of the Premier League? Finished last season as the top assist maker at the Bernabeu but will also be expected to deliver the goals, the former Benfica man managed just 22 in 124 La Liga appearances.

Daley Blind
From: Ajax
Cost: £14m
Rating 8/10

The Dutchman can fill a number of roles and will always give 100% and the 24 year old is moving at the right time having served a very impressive apprenticeship at Ajax, winning four successive Eredivisie titles for the side he represented since the age of eight. Offers strength in depth across the back and in a defensive midfield role.

Radamel Falcao
From: AS Monaco
Cost: £6m Loan Fee
Rating: 9/10

Could work out to be the best bit of business done by Man United this summer. Yes the 28 year old Colombian will be on a massive salary but if his goals can help the Old Trafford side mount a genuine Premier League title challenge, or at the very least secure a return to the Champions League for 2015/16, then it’s a fee that will more than pay for itself. Radamel Falcao has scored goals for fun in Portugal, Spain and France and has the physical presence to thrive in the Premier League.
