Recent reports suggest that Liverpool are closing in on the signing of former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes. The Reds are free to sign the Spaniard outside of the transfer window because he is a free agent.
With many other teams still on the lookout for further additions to the squad, CaughtOffside looks at the top ten players available right now. Could any of these players be the answer for your club? After all, it’s either this, or wait until January.
10) Tomasz Kuszczak
The 32-year-old was expected to show his true talent after leaving Manchester United in 2012, as other United back-ups, such as Tim Howard, have done in the past. While he did that to an extent during two years with Brighton, he is now without a club.
9) Adriano
He was supposed to be the next great Brazilian striker, but in reality the 32-year-old has barely kicked a ball in the last four years. Those who remember his best days as an Inter Milan player could be tempted into a move. Although admittedly he is on this list more for the memories than his overall ability.
8) Jermaine Pennant
A Premier League veteran who has played for Arsenal, Liverpool and, most recently, Stoke City. Still just 31-years-old, he could provide some much needed experience for a newly promoted side, or even a Championship team.
7) Jack Collison
The ex-West Ham midfielder was cruelly cut down by injury just as he looked to be developing into a top player for both club and Wales. Since returning he has struggled to break into Championship clubs Bournemouth and Wigan while on loan.
6) Diego Lugano
His lack of pace was exposed at Premier League level last season, but he was still a World Cup defender this summer, and his vast experience could prove useful to someone.
5) Nicolas Anelka
His controversial celebration (pictured) cut short his time at West Brom last season, just as he was starting to rediscover his goalscoring touch. If someone can control the attitude and keep him firing, he could score the goals to keep a team in the Premier League.
4) Hugo Almeida
Only 30, the 6ft 3in striker possesses the strength to make it as a target man in the Premier League and scored a handy 15 goals in the Turkish Premier League last season before being replaced by former Chelsea man Demba Ba.
3) Jonas
The 30-year-old was hit by injury last season but managed to score 10 goals in 22 matches for Valencia – that followed two seasons where he scored 19 goals in each for the Spanish side, mostly playing as a second striker.
2) Victor Valdes
Vastly experienced at the top level, having won major honours with both club and country, although the latter was usually only as part of the squad, rather than the team. He would provide some much needed competition for Liverpool number one Simon Mignolet if the deal does go through.
1) Ronaldinho
Surely worth a one year contract for shirt sales alone? Once the world’s best player, Ronaldinho is now 34 and way, way past his prime. But just for the star power alone, who wouldn’t love to see the buck-toothed Brazilian finally have a crack at the Premier League.
