Arsenal spent heavily this summer on improving their squad, adding the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck to their side.

However, despite signing youngster Calum Chambers, the Gunners are still short in defence, meaning they may need to strengthen in that position in January. Here are five centr- backs the club could sign in January.

Ron Vlaar – Aston Villa

The Dutch centre back was linked with moves to both Arsenal and Manchester United this summer. However, neither side managed to land their man meaning Vlaar remains at Villa.

He may not be there for much longer though as he only has one year remaining on his contract, meaning he could leave for free next summer.

If he doesn’t sign a new deal, Villa may have to sell him in January. The Gunners will surely be right at the front of the cue for Vlaar’s signature if he becomes available in the new year.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos – Borussia Dortmund

The Greek centre-back is a player that Arsenal targeted in the summer but were unable to sign. Reports suggested that the Gunners were close to signing the defender but any move never came to fruition as the North London club focused their attention on signing Danny Welbeck.

Papastathopoulos is able to play in a number positions, a trait that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger likes in his players. Expect the veteran French boss to make another move for Papasthopoulos in the New Year.

Raphael Varane – Real Madrid

It is quite surprising that Varane has been linked with a move away from Real Madrid. He lost his place in Los Blancos first team last season but he showed in his debut term that he has all the potential to become a world class defender one day.

If he does become available, expect Arsenal to look at signing him. He could be the answer to the Gunners’ defensive problems not just in the short term, but also the long term as well.

Matija Nastasic – Manchester City

The Serbian defender is another player who struggled last season, more due to injuries than anything. He has all the potential to be a quality centre back but he is unlikely to get an opportunity to show this at City, with the club recently signing Eliaquim Mangala for £32 million.

If he isn’t getting first team football, Nastasic may seek to leave in January and Arsenal would be at the front of the queue for his services, especially after the club enquired about his availability in the closing days of the summer transfer window.

Mats Hummels – Borussia Dortmund

The German defender is certainly one of the best centre-backs in world football at the moment. If he came onto the market, several of the world’s leading clubs would be interested in him.

Dortmund were unwilling to let Hummels go during the summer transfer window with both Manchester United and Arsenal interested in signing the centre back. Things might be different in January, especially if Dortmund don’t look like winning any silverware.
