Five Players Manchester United Should Have Sold This Summer

Danny Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa left Manchester United this summer.

It has been a busy summer at Manchester United, with players like Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria being brought into Louis Van Gaal side while the likes of Nani and Tom Cleverley have left the club in search of regular football.

Even though the likes of Cleverley have left Old Trafford, there are still a number of players who should leave Manchester both for their own good and that of the club’s. Here are five players that Manchester United should have sold this summer.

1. Anderson

The Brazilian midfielder has been at Old Trafford since 2007 but has struggled to break into the club’s first team with injuries and poor form hampering his development. During United’s League Cup thrashing at the hands of MK Dons, Anderson was truly awful, continuously giving the ball away. It looked like he had played his last game for the Red Devils. Van Gaal was happy to sell Anderson unfortunately no one really wanted to sign him. The midfielder really does need to leave Manchester because his career has stagnated. He needs a good run of games without injury and that is something he is very unlikely to get at United.

2. Jonny Evans

Like Anderson, Evans performance against MK Dons was shocking. He didn’t get much better when United visited Burnley in the Premier League. Although the Red Devils managed to keep a clean sheet, the defender looked very suspect even against one of the worst attacks in the Premier League. Unfortunately, the 26 year old hasn’t developed into the quality centre back many had hoped he would and he might now be better moving to a club lower down the league where the pressure isn’t as intense as it is at United.

3. Rafael

Many thought Rafael would be the ideal replacement for Gary Neville when he joined United in 2008. Unfortunately, the Brazilians career hasn’t really taken off during his time at Old Trafford. The full back seems to be fine going forward but he has always seemed a liability at the back. There always seems to be a mistake on the horizon when Rafael is playing. The 24 year old is no Gary Neville and Van Gaal appears to know this, not selecting the defender in any of United’s league games so far this season.

4. Antonio Valencia

During his first few seasons at United, Valencia looked like he would become a truly exceptional winger. Unfortunately, it appears that he has lost the pace and power that made him such a threat in his early days at Old Trafford. He isn’t able to trouble good full-backs, something wingers at United need to do. The 29 year old has had a good career with United but is now past his best and needs to move on for the good of himself and the club.

5. Marouane Fellaini

The midfielder was David Moyes big signing last summer. Unfortunately, like the Scot, Fellaini’s time at Old Trafford has been a complete failure. He has spent much of his time on the treatment table due to various injuries and when he has played, he has been completely ineffective. The Belgian has lacked the passing ability to succeed at United and he hasn’t even been a powerful presence in midfield. This summer would have been the perfect opportunity for Fellaini to move clubs and start again unfortunately, he remains at the Theatre of Dreams. Under Van Gaal, the 26 year old isn’t going to be first choice so he will instead sit on the bench, with his career continuing to stagnate.
