The Dutch international, known to be a favourite of United boss Louis van Gaal from their time together with the Netherlands national team, has supposedly ditched his agent Chiel Dekker to join SEG (Sports Entertainment Group), who were involved in bringing Robin van Persie to United from Arsenal in 2012.

Strootman was linked with United for much of the summer, though an injury looked to have complicated his proposed switch to Old Trafford.

Still, with van Gaal missing out on other big-name midfield targets such as Arturo Vidal and Toni Kroos during the summer transfer window, he could now come back with a £25m bid for Strootman when he returns to fitness.

The classy Dutch playmaker first caught the eye at PSV before joining Roma last summer, and looks to have all the qualities on the ball to become a great long-term replacement for Paul Scholes.

United have also been linked with reviving their interest in Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, in January signings that could take their spending for the season to £200m.
