10) West Ham United (€116m spent)

The Hammers have never been short on cash, despite a spell in the Championship, and have spent big in recent years on the likes of Andy Carroll.

9) Aston Villa (€129m spent)

Something of a surprise entry in the top ten considering their habit of selling their best players – think James Milner, Ashley Young and Gareth Barry – but they have also spent big on the likes of Darren Bent.

8) Southampton (€156m spent)

Southampton have spent well over the last six years as the South Coast club have fought their way up from League One to the Premier League. Their Liverpool fueled spending spree this summer has contributed massively to their eighth place.

7) Sunderland (€162m spent)

Sunderland have been steady spenders over the last six years, with their regular changes in manager bringing about a regular turnover in players. Scotland striker Steven Fletcher has been their major purchase in recent years.

6) Arsenal (€288m spent)

Not renowned as big spenders, but Arsenal have been steadily upping their efforts in recent years, paying big money for both Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, while this summer also saw them splash out on Calum Chambers and Danny Welbeck.

5) Tottenham (€291m spent)

Tottenham spent big last summer following the world record departure of Gareth Bale. However, they have never been shy with their cash, and will be disappointed that their efforts in the transfer market have not brought them more success.

4) Liverpool (€382m spent)

Liverpool spent very well this summer following the departure of Luis Suarez, but like Tottenham they have rarely failed to allow a transfer window to go past quietly. Andy Carroll and Fernando Torres were both big money acquisitions in previous years.

3) Manchester United (€406m spent)

Manchester United have broken their own transfer record twice in the last nine months, as well as smashing the British record to sign Angel di Maria from Real Madrid this summer. After a record summer of spending, it’s no surprise to see them near the top of the list.

2) Chelsea (€435m spent)

Chelsea’s spending may have slowed since the early days of Roman Abramovich’s reign as Chelsea owner – but he is still not afraid to get out the chequebook, as he did this summer for Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Filipe Luis.

1) Manchester City (€615m spent)

Manchester City are unrecognizable from the team they were six years ago. The money of Khaldoon Al Mubarak has changed the club from top to bottom and transformed them into a true European superpower.
