United have been put on high alert to the possibility of bringing the megastar back to the club after his agent, Jorge Mendes, fell out with the Madrid board and is keen to move him away from the Spanish capital.

And despite rival interest from Chelsea, it’s claimed that Louis van Gaal is desperate to win the race for the Portuguese superstar – and is ready to offer huge wages.

Ronaldo is currently raking in £290,000 per week in Madrid, but United have spelled out that they are willing to drive his weekly wage to over £300,000 in order to prize him away from the European champions.

The 29-year-old has heavily hinted this summer that he would one day like to return to the northwest, giving fans hope that a reunion is nearer than they thought.
