10. Ivan Rakitic

£75,000 per week

The Croatian international only joined this summer, but his exceptional form for Sevilla last term has earned him a massive pay increase.

9. Jeremy Mathieu

£90,000 per week

Another new recruit, and he is earning a lot for someone of 31 years of age, meaning the jury is still out on whether he is worth the outlay.

8. Javier Mascherano

£100,000 per week

The Argentine is earning his massive wage by being so versatile and filling in where the club need holes plugging in the midfield and the defence. Came close to leaving this summer, though.

7. Gerard Pique

£120,000 per week

The Spanish international has proved that he is worth a healthy sum, but he will now be tasked with having to earn it more than ever in the wake of Carles Puyol’s retirement.

6. Dani Alves

£120,000 per week

The popular full-back is in his last year at the club and may have to battle to earn a similar crust at his next club.

5. Andres Iniesta

£130,000 per week

Iniesta recently agreed a new deal with the club having been linked with Chelsea, and his new wage sees him amongst the better paid players at the club.

4. Xavi

£130,000 per week

The veteran star is also in his final year at the club, but such is his influence that he has maintained a healthy bank balance throughout.

3. Neymar

£150,000 per week

He has started off with a handsome salary, but he will have to continue to prove his worth if he wants to see those numbers rise.

2. Luis Suarez

£200,000 per week

He won’t kick a ball until October, but he will surely prove to be worth every penny once he returns to the side.

1. Lionel Messi

£256,000 per week (after tax)

The best player at the club is understandably the best payed player at the club and will probably earn more as the years tick by.
