Top Ten Worst Tackles In Football History: Manchester United Legend & Liverpool Flop Included

Tackling is an art that many fail to master. Here are ten of the worst tackles ever.

Tackling is certainly not the same as it used to be in football, with referees cracking down on bad challenges and removing some of the physicality from the game. There is arguably no longer a place for the likes of Roy Keane, Lee Bowyer, or Ron “Chopper” Harris in modern day football.

There are still plenty of bad tackles on display though. Here are ten of the worst.

10) Bill Hamid

A horrendously timed challenge with unbelievable impact. Goalkeepers are known for not being the greatest tacklers, but this was just horrible.

9) Ben Sigmund

This tackle is just pure filth by Ben Sigmund. There is no attempt to play the ball whatsoever, and he very clearly just stamps on the player with both feet. Not what you want to see in the game.

8) Coelho

Clearly annoyed at the opponents show boating and unorthodox dribbling style, Coelho has had enough and just cleans him out.

7) Chris Mavinga

Ex-Liverpool man Chris Mavinga with a shocking challenge. It can’t really be called a tackle, as he just kicks his opponent in the face.

6) Ben Thatcher

One of the most violent, aggressive, and dislikeable characters in the game, this challenge shows exactly why Ben Thatcher was so hated. No attempt on the ball, and a horrible forearm across the face of the unsuspecting player.

5) Kevin Muscat

How he could have any complaints about this one is beyond me, intimating that he got the ball. A nasty scissor challenge by Kevin Muscat in the Australian league.

4) James Morrison

Right under the referee’s nose, James Morrison clearly just wanted to take a chunk out of Ronaldo. A sentiment shared by many I’m sure.

3) Nigel de Jong

Probably the most famous challenge on the list. How de Jong escaped without a red card is a mystery.

2) Callum McManaman

Poorly timed, over the ball, studs first, into a planted leg, there is really nothing else that Callum McManaman could have done wrong here. These kind of challenges can easily be career ending, another tackle that should have seen red but didn’t.

1) Roy Keane

This particular tackle was career ending for Alf-inge Haaland, Roy Keane getting some revenge for an earlier incident between the pair. A malicious and disgusting challenge by the former Manchester United man, the kind of tackle that should arguably be punished far more severely.

There are a number of other challenges that haven’t quite made it onto the list. Arsenal’s Eduardo having his ankle shattered, Karl Henry sending Wigan’s Jordi Gomez flying. If you have any other tackles you think should be on this list. let us know in the comments.
