There’s no doubt the Gunners look in need of further strengthening after a poor start to the season, with attacking duo Mesut Ozil and Danny Welbeck in the firing line as the team look stale going forward.

Although Welbeck will likely remain at the club as a squad player, the £16m man doesn’t look like convincing as first choice for the club, while Ozil has attracted interest from Bayern Munich after a series of below-par displays.

With a busy January possibly in store, here’s a look at how Arsenal could line up for the second half of the season, with three exciting new signings.

Goalkeeper and defence:

Although Arsenal could certainly do with more depth in defence, the club are not currently looking likely to sign anyone in that area, leaving the Gunners’ back four looking the same as it does at the moment, with Mathieu Debuchy, Kieran Gibbs, Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny lining up in front of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

Midfield:

Arsenal may instead look to improve on their current defensive midfield options to help their back four, with Sporting Lisbon youngster William Carvalho believed to be their top target in that part of the pitch. The Portuguese international was linked with the Gunners in the summer, but talks have reportedly progressed since then and he could be set for a January switch to the Emirates Stadium, lining up here alongside Jack Wilshere in a midfield two.

Attack:

In a superb-looking new front four, Julian Draxler and Edinson Cavani could be on their way to Arsenal this January as Arsene Wenger reportedly revives his interest in both players. The German youngster impressed for Schalke against Chelsea in this week’s Champions League clash at Stamford Bridge, while Cavani is unhappy at PSG and looking to leave in the near future.

If Ozil does leave the club for Bayern Munich, there’s no doubt Draxler would be an ideal replacement for his fellow countryman, while Cavani is the world class centre-forward the Gunners need right now, representing a significant upgrade on Welbeck and Olivier Giroud.
