Arsenal have made an improved offer of £21.3m to Sporting Lisbon for midfielder William Carvalho, as they continue their search for a holding midfield player.
The Gunners chased Real Madrid star Sami Khedira for much of the transfer window, but turned their attention to the Portuguese youngster once it became apparent that the German would not be moving to the Emirates Stadium.
Reports on Goal.com claim that Arsenal have now upped their offer for Carvalho, after having an opening bid of £20m rejected. The North London club are also chasing a striker and a central defender in the final days of the summer transfer window.
Arsenal are waiting from a response from Lisbon, after recent reports suggested that they were willing to lower their initial £28m valuation for the player.
The source suggests that the Gunners have been working on signing Carvalho for many weeks and are now in the final stages of ironing out the complications of his third-party ownership.
In addition, the complex nature of the negotiations mean they are likely to go down to the wire but Arsenal are increasingly hopeful of capturing the 22-year-old before Monday night’s transfer deadline.
