Barcelona decided to shake up their squad following a disappointing campaign where they failed to win any silverware.

One of the casualties was Fabregas, who struggled to impose himself in the Barca first team during his second spell at the Nou Camp.

Despite this, Mourinho claims he was surprised that the La Liga giants allowed such a quality player to leave.

“I thought he was going to stay at Barcelona,” Mourinho is quoted as saying by The Mirror.

”I was looking at him as the natural successor of players that were getting older, like Xavi. The surprise for me was not that he didn’t go to Arsenal, but that he was leaving Barcelona.

”He’s 27 and it’s the perfect age. Physically, he’s on a high, mentally, he’s very stable, he has tactical education. Cesc’s stats are fantastic, the number of assists, the qualities he brings.”

Fabregas has played a crucial role in Chelsea’s excellent start to the season, claiming six assists for his new side while also forming a devastating partnership with Diego Costa that has led to the former Atletico Madrid striker scoring seven goals in four games.
