Chelsea will try their luck with an ambitious £40m bid for Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling this January as the England youngster stalls on signing a new contract at Anfield.

The Blues are being linked with a number of surprise big-money moves at the moment, with the likes of Lionel Messi (£118m) and Ross Barkley (£50m) also said to be in their sights as they plot some big spending to enhance their already-superb squad.

The club have done well to keep on the right side of Financial Fair Play by offloading various youngsters of theirs that have been sent out on loan, and it could be that the likes of Mohamed Salah, Christian Atsu and others could be offloaded to help fund a big-money raid on one of their main rivals.

Sterling has recently established himself as one of the most exciting young talents in the Premier League and perhaps Europe, and was recently linked with a £35m move to Real Madrid as the Spanish giants also keep an eye on his ongoing contract dispute.

The 19-year-old remains on a surprisingly low contract for a first-teamer, having only truly established himself as first choice for Brendan Rodgers’ side midway through last season.

Liverpool are now struggling to get the talented wide-man to commit his future to the club, and he may be considering offers from elsewhere as Chelsea may look a more tempting option for him to continue his development.

The Blues look favourites to win the Premier League title this season and are building an immensely strong squad under Jose Mourinho, and Sterling may now become the latest big name to switch between the two clubs, joining the likes of Fernando Torres and Daniel Sturridge in recent moves.

Although Sterling’s current contract does not expire until 2016, it may be that a big offer in the region of £40m could be enough to give the Reds something to think about this January.

Sterling would be a great long-term signing for Chelsea, and a cheaper option than Messi, who has today been linked with a sensational £128m move to Manchester City.
