The Serie A forward is said to be unsettle at the San Paolo and Napoli’s inability to negotiate a path through the qualifying stages of the Champions League this term has left Rafa Benitez having to sell a player or two to balance the books.

Napoli have struggled for form this term and this too could lead former Real Madrid forward Higuain to consider his options amid growing speculation that the 26 year old could be set to leave when the transfer window reopens.

Despite bringing in Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert, from AC Milan and Southampton respectively, Rodgers is still to effectively fill the void left by the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona and Liverpool’s owners are ready to dig deep to help secure another striker signing.

Liverpool are ready to offer around £22m plus the services of Brazilian defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva, who is known to be a player Rafa Benitez is pursuing, in exchange for Higuain.

Higuain was a regular goal-scorer throughout his six and a half year stint at Real Madrid, racking 107 goals in 190 La Liga appearances, before moving to Naples in July 2013 and has netted 27 goals in 55 appearances for the Italian side.
