The world of football is in mourning after the tragic deaths of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva – also a professional footballer with Penafiel – in a car crash in Spain.
The two men were travelling on the A-52 highway in the Spanish province of Zamora when a tyre blew out while the vehicle in which they were travelling was overtaking another car, causing it to go off the road and become engulfed in flames (Daily Mail).
The news was reported by Marca in Spain just before 9am GMT and soon corroborated by media outlets in the UK, with Liverpool Football Club confirming the death of their player in an official club statment on Thursday morning.
Tributes pour in from the world of football
Tributes have been paid to the two brothers within and outside the footballing community, with Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also sending his heartfelt condolences. Cristiano Ronaldo also posted a poignant message on social media in reaction to the tragedy.
UEFA have subsquently announced that a moment of silence will be observed at each fixture at Women’s Euro 2025 today and tomorrow in memory of Diogo Jota and André Silva. One of those games will feature their native Portugal, who face world champions Spain in Bern tonight.

The Liverpool forward was a significiant contributor to the club’s Premier League triumph earlier this year and also won the UEFA Nations League with Portugal only last month.
The 28-year-old scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Reds since joining them from Wolves in 2020, winning several major trophies in his five years at Anfield.
He married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso only 11 days ago and had been a father to three young children.
His younger brother André Silva (25) played with FC Porto at various youth levels and had gone on to forge a professional career with Gondomar and Penafiel.
