The Red Devils speant heavily in the summer, bringing in big names such as Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao to improve their squad after last season’s disappointing 7th place finish in the Premier League.

Louis van Gaal looks set to continue this approach of high-profile, expensive moves in the transfer market, with two Serie A midfielders now on the Dutchman’s agenda for when the transfer window re-opens in the middle of the season.

The players on United’s list are as follows:

1) Kevin Strootman (AS Roma)

Expected to cost around £40m, AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman is one of United’s top targets, with the Dutchman having impressed his fellow countryman Louis van Gaal during his time in charge of the Netherlands national team. Even with the promising purchases of Ander Herrera and Daley Blind this summer, there’s no doubt that Strootman could add something to the squad at Old Trafford, having impressed tremendously since moving to the Italian top flight from PSV last year.

2) Juan Cuadrado (Fiorentina)

Secondly, United want to spend a further £30m on the signing of Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado. The Colombian international has been a highly impressive performer in Serie A down the years, and was also targeted by the likes of Barcelona during the summer, though he ended up staying with La Viola. Still, they look unable to keep him as big clubs circle and United may now be the favourites to win the race for his signature.
