The Brazilian international is arguably past his best now and won’t be a long-term option for United, with plenty of other right-backs out there for the club to consider instead…

1) Juan Cuadrado (Fiorentina)

Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado may be a more attacking option, but he has played as a right-back before and could be ideal at right wing-back if Louis van Gaal opts to go back to a 3-5-2 formation at any point in the future.

2) Seamus Coleman (Everton)

One of the finest right-backs in the Premier League, Everton’s Seamus Coleman has recently been linked with a move to Chelsea after his fine form, and could be a great signing for United too.

3) Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton)

A young English player bang in form, Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne is another exciting Premier League star who could make a great addition for United.

4) Yuto Nagatomo (Inter Milan)

One of the finest full-backs in Serie A, Yuto Nagatomo can play either right-back or left-back and may be a better player on top form than Alves at the moment. Real Madrid have also shown an interest in the past.

5) Mattia De Sciglio (AC Milan)

A highly promising Serie A starlet, Mattia De Sciglio has been linked with United, Arsenal and other top clubs before and would surely be a better long-term option than the ageing Alves.
