Eight of the most overpriced players currently on the market.

Transfer fees in football look increasingly like going out of control in the modern game, with some absolutely mad prices floating about at the moment for some of the most wanted players in the game.

Still, clubs keep on spending vast amounts to get the players they want, with Real Madrid and Barcelona known for their ‘Galactico’ approach to the transfer market, while Manchester United also invested heavily in bringing in big names such as Angel Di Maria this summer.

According to various recent reports there could be more huge signings heading to Old Trafford in the near future, with some crazily expensive players said to be on Louis van Gaal’s agenda, with some of the most overpriced players on the market at the moment listed below:

8) Saido Berahino (West Bromwich Albion)

According to the Daily Mail, West Bromwich Albion’s young striker Saido Berahino – a top prospect, no doubt- is already valued by his club at an astonishing £30m! The 21-year-old has just 39 Premier League appearances and ten goals to his name, but could move for just £2m less than Chelsea paid for Diego Costa this summer.

7) Ross Barkley (Everton)

A great player in the making, no question, but according to the Daily Star, Everton’s Ross Barkley would already command an asking price of £50m, an absurd price for one so inexperienced at the top level of the game.

6) Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint-Germain)

A player who has already moved for big money, it would supposedly take a mad £55m for Arsenal to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani this January, according to the Daily Mirror, despite the Uruguayan’s highly mediocre form since making the move to Ligue 1 last summer.

5) Julian Draxler (Schalke)

Another young player who has achieved little in the game in his short career so far, Julian Draxler’s £37m tag reported by the Metro actually seems a more sensible price than some of the others on here, though this fee still seems mad for a player who only recently went on a long scoring drought and may not fulfill his potential.

4) Arturo Vidal (Juventus)

Various price tags have been mooted for the possible signing of Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal, who has long been linked with a move to Manchester United. The highest comes from the Daily Star, who claim it could take £52m to bring the Chilean to Old Trafford. A great player, but is he really worth that, when the Red Devils got two fine midfield players in Ander Herrera and Daley Blind this summer, who cost less than that combined.

3) Kevin Strootman (AS Roma)

In another potentially expensive midfielder move, AS Roma’s Kevin Strootman would reportedly cost United a staggering £60m, according to the Daily Mirror. To give some context, the Dutchman moved from PSV for just £15m last summer and has spent a lot of time out injured, so what has happened to quadruple his value?

2) Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)

Already the most expensive player of all time at a mind-blowing £85m, it is now claimed that Gareth Bale of Real Madrid is worth an incredible £90m, according to the Daily Express. The Welshman has been linked with a return to the Premier League with United, but that crazy price will surely put them off.

1) Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)

Perhaps a tongue-in-cheek comment, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent recently claimed that the Real Madrid star would cost 1bn euros, according to reports from the Guardian. If any footballer is worth that, then Ronaldo is probably that player, but the question remains – is ANY player worth that?
