Madrid Legend Raul Signs For New York Cosmos

The internet has lit up this morning with the news that Real Madrid legend Raul is set to sign for US second division side New York Cosmos.

New York Cosmos play in America’s NASL (North American Soccer League), the second tier in pro-soccer in the US. There is no promotion and relegation with the MLS, meaning the league themselves have ambitions of one day rivalling the MLS’s first tier status.

One way to put pressure on the MLS is to use the same strategy as their big brother – purchasing ageing European legends that will attract big crowds and thus bring money into the set-up.

Raul is the first piece in the jigsaw, and by signing for the New York Cosmos he will be playing for America’s most famous side. He will start with his new team in the 2015 season.

Raul scored 323 goals in 16 years for Real Madrid and 44 goals in 102 games for Spain.
